DONNE DI LUSSO
The Maison

Donne di Lusso

Women of luxury.

An Indian maison of handcrafted luxury handbags, made one limited edition at a time from materials gathered across India and designs drawn from its oldest luxuries.

A Letter from the Founder

Why we exist

Donne di Lusso means “women of luxury”. The name is a promise to the woman who carries our work: that what she holds was made for her, slowly, by hand, and in very small number.

India has always made beautiful things for those who could wait for them. Trunks for royal journeys, saddles for cavalry, caskets for jewels, copper for temples. Much of that patience has been traded for speed. We began the maison in New Delhi to bring it back.

We make one design at a time, in editions small enough that every piece can be numbered, recorded and delivered by hand. When an edition is placed, it is never made again.

The Legacy

Designs that begin in the archive.

We do not follow seasons. Each design starts with an object that was made to last for generations.

  1. I

    The Royal Trunk

The structured body and squared shoulders of AGES come from the travelling trunks made for India’s royal households: built to be carried for a lifetime, then handed down.

  2. II

    The Saddler’s Seam

Our two-needle stitch is the stitch of the old saddlers, who sewed for horses and riders and could not afford a seam that failed.

  3. III

    The Jewel Box

The copper clasp is drawn from the locks of antique jewel caskets, closed with one deliberate turn.

  4. IV

    The Temple Metal

Copper has been offered, worn and treasured in India for millennia. We use it for the same reason: it ages with grace.

Gathered from across India

Every material, chosen at its source.

We travel to the craftspeople who still work the old way, and choose each material by hand.

MaterialFromHow it is made
Full-grain leatherTanneries of Kanpur and ChennaiSelected hide by hide, then vegetable-tanned slowly with plant tannins, so it deepens with every year of use.
Solid copperCoppersmiths of Punjab and MoradabadCast, hammered and hand-finished by metalworkers whose families have shaped copper and brass for generations.
Lining silkHandlooms of VaranasiWoven on traditional looms in a quiet tone, so the inside of the bag is as considered as the outside.
Thread and waxOur atelier in New DelhiLinen thread waxed by hand before every seam, for a stitch that tightens rather than loosens with time.
The handsOur atelier in New DelhiEvery bag is cut, sewn, edged, assembled and signed by a single artisan, from the first cut to the last stitch.
The Hands

One artisan.
One bag.
One signature.

Each bag stays with the same pair of hands from the first cut to the last stitch. When it is finished, the artisan signs its certificate, and their name is recorded beside the owner’s in our registry.

Our Vows

What the maison will always keep.

  • Never remade

When an edition is placed, its pattern is retired.

  • Never discounted

The price of a piece is the price of its making.

  • Never mass-produced

One artisan, one bag, from start to finish.

  • Always by hand

Made by hand, and delivered by hand.
